The Subterranean Sessions, a weekly experimental music series held in the below-grade rehearsal space beneath the former army surplus store, announced Tuesday that all amplifiers must now remain below sixty decibels after residents of the newly occupied Luxe Lofts above filed a formal noise complaint with the city.

Series organizer Mara Lindquist, who also manages the crystal inventory at Radiant Earth on South 19th, said the decision followed a mediated conversation facilitated by the Bozeman Arts Council and a sound healer from Livingston. “We honored the container,” Lindquist said. “The frequencies were asking for containment. The new neighbors are holding space for quiet. We’re meeting them in the middle.”

The condos, which opened in March and market themselves as “curated urban sanctuary living,” feature floor-to-ceiling windows and a rooftop fire pit with views of the Bridgers. Unit 4B resident Chadwick Pomeroy, a remote-working software architect who relocated from Austin in November, described the bass frequencies as “disruptive to my evening regulation practice.”

“I moved here for the vibration of the mountains,” Pomeroy said, adjusting a bracelet of polished hematite. “Not the vibration of a prepared piano at eleven p.m. on a Tuesday.”

The compromise allows the series to continue Thursdays at reduced volume, with a new emphasis on acoustic instrumentation, breathwork accompaniment, and what Lindquist calls “sonic minimalism as radical presence.” The first adjusted session last Thursday drew twenty-three attendees, who sat on meditation cushions while a cellist bowed sustained tones that registered forty-two decibels on the city’s calibrated meter.

Several longtime attendees expressed gratitude for the evolution. “It feels more intentional now,” said Kael Sorenson, a barista at Wild Crumb who has attended since the series began in a different basement on North Wallace in 2021. “Less noise. More listening. The condos helped us remember why we started.”

The Luxe Lofts HOA has agreed to sponsor the series’ fall equinox sound bath, providing artisanal sparkling water and a gratitude journal for each participant.
