A new development marketed as “workforce attainable” opened its waitlist Monday at the Basecamp Commons sales office. The one-bedroom units begin at $725,000 and include a storage locker and access to a shared hot tub.
Dale Henshaw, who bought his A-frame on Andesite Road in 1989 for $42,000, stood in line with a thermos of black coffee. “Attainable used to mean you could swing it on a lift ticket and a summer painting gig,” he said. “Now it means you need a portfolio and a parent’s signature.”
The developer, Summit Ridge Partners, describes the project as “a critical step toward housing sustainability.” The brochure features a couple in Patagonia fleeces holding ceramic mugs beside a gas fireplace. The square footage is 620.
Chadwick Montgomery, who splits time between a Yellowstone Club membership and a San Francisco venture fund, toured the model unit and nodded. “Finally, something reasonable for the kids,” he said. “They’ve been complaining about the commute from Bozeman.”
Maria Gonzalez, who drives the Swift Current lift and picks up shifts at the Hungry Moose, did not attend the open house. She was working a double. Her roommate texted photos of the finishings: quartz counters, vinyl plank, a balcony that faces the snowmaking pond.
The waitlist filled by 2 p.m. Twenty-three names. Eighteen are LLCs.
Henshaw drove home past the new workforce housing, the luxury housing, and the empty lots held for future housing. His A-frame needs a roof. The estimate came in at $38,000.
