The building at 1420 West Main Street held Willey’s Tire & Alignment for thirty-seven years. As of Monday it holds Basecamp Collective, a membership-based gear library where founding members pay $275 per month for access to a rotating inventory of backcountry skis, pack rafts, and four-season tents.

Owner Dana Kestrel said the pivot made sense after the tire business became unpredictable. “People aren’t replacing tires like they used to,” Kestrel said. “But they’re buying $4,000 mountain bikes they ride twice. We’re just matching supply to desire.”

The space features reclaimed beetle-kill pine shelving and a pour-over coffee station sourced from a roaster in Livingston. Members scan a QR code to reserve gear through an app developed by a Bozeman startup that was acquired by a Denver firm last fall. The app shows real-time availability of the library’s twelve DPS Pagoda 112 RP skis and six Alpacka Forager pack rafts.

Founding memberships sold out in three days. A waitlist of forty-two names includes two MSU professors, a traveling nurse, and a software engineer who works from a Sprinter van parked near the fairgrounds. Annual renewal is $3,300 plus a $150 maintenance fee.

Kestrel said Basecamp Collective is exploring a tiered model. “We’re calling it the Summit Series,” Kestrel said. “For $650 a month you get priority booking on holiday weekends and a dedicated gear locker with a USB-C charging port.”

The building’s previous tenant, Bill Willey, retired to Livingston in April. He stopped by Tuesday to pick up a mail forward. “Nice place,” Willey said. “Though I don’t see a single tire iron.”

Basecamp Collective opens to the public Saturday with a launch event featuring a local distillery and a representative from the Yellowstone Club’s new wellness initiative. The first fifty attendees receive a branded Nalgene bottle.
