Hosts at a Roundup radio station have begun reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of each broadcast, a move they describe as “a simple gesture” and Arbitron describes as “statistically irrelevant.”
“We just felt it was the right thing to do,” said morning host Gary Tompkins, who came up with the idea after his previous initiative—playing “God Bless America” every hour—failed to move the needle. “This is about values, not ratings. Although if ratings went up, that would also be fine.”
The station’s six regular listeners have responded positively, with longtime fan Doris Mayfield calling it “nice, I guess” before asking if they could play more Merle Haggard.
Station management has considered additional patriotic programming, including a segment where hosts read the Constitution aloud, a weekly recitation of the Gettysburg Address, and a proposed “Freedom Hour” consisting entirely of eagle sounds and cannon fire.
“We’re exploring all options,” said station manager Bill Pruitt. “Nothing is off the table except, apparently, people tuning in.”
The Pledge will be recited each morning at 6:15 a.m., immediately following farm reports and immediately preceding complete silence in most vehicles across the listening area.
