Construction on the proposed Serenity Meadows Wellness and Forensic Facility, located just past the traffic circle at Four Corners, has been officially paused. A district court judge issued the injunction late Tuesday, following a petition from neighbors who argued that the sound of deep breathing might interfere with the ambient roar of diesel engines idling in the intersection.

The facility was intended to provide a serene space for mental health evaluation, featuring reclaimed timber siding and a labyrinth designed by a consultant from Big Sky. Developers had hoped to break ground before the frost, noting that the site’s proximity to a strip mall and a new luxury condo complex would offer patients a seamless transition back into the frantic pace of modern Bozeman life.

“We just don’t think a center for quiet contemplation is a good fit for this specific plot of dirt,” said Dale Pave-It, a local resident who has lived in the valley for six years. “Right now, this empty lot is home to the most beautiful gridlock in the county. If you build a place for healing, people might stop honking at each other, and that really changes the character of the neighborhood.”

The project has faced a variety of challenges since its inception. City planners were initially confused by the floor plans, which included “no-Wi-Fi zones” and “areas where people sit without staring at phones.” Local skeptics also pointed out that the facility’s proximity to the highway might prove counterproductive, as the view of a massive, half-finished mixed-use development tends to induce the exact type of existential dread the center was built to mitigate.

A representative for the developers noted that they had hoped to utilize local materials, including rocks hauled from the construction sites of three nearby luxury hotels. They maintain that the facility would have been a quiet neighbor, provided that “quiet” was defined as being at least as loud as a constant stream of oversized pickup trucks.

The court has requested further studies on how a therapeutic environment impacts local traffic flow, specifically during the peak hours when everyone is simultaneously rushing to work or to the trailhead. Until then, the lot will remain empty.

It is currently designated as a place where people can watch the snow melt in peace.
