Leland “Lee” Callahan, 82, died peacefully at home on August 3, 2026, with the Bridger Mountains visible through his bedroom window. He was born March 12, 1944, in the farmhouse his grandfather built on what is now the east edge of Belgrade.

Lee worked the family ground for sixty years, measuring seasons in first cutting and last frost rather than fiscal quarters. He attended the one-room schoolhouse on Dry Creek Road until it closed, then rode the bus to Belgrade High where he met his wife, Sarah, in 1961. They married the following spring and never left the valley.

He served on the Gallatin Conservation District board for three decades, arguing for water rights with the same quiet persistence he brought to fence repair. Lee never understood why anyone would pave good hay ground, but he sold the back forty in 2006 to a developer from Bozeman who paid what everyone agreed was a normal amount of money. The subdivision that replaced it now bears a name Lee never learned to pronounce.

His children, Michael and Janet, moved to Belgrade and Livingston respectively because the numbers no longer worked for returning. Lee understood. He still drove the old Ford to the Co-op every Tuesday for coffee with the few who remembered when North 19th was a dirt road.
