Sometimes, when I’m walking up the M Trail, I notice things. It’s such a beautiful Bozeman staple, a quick climb right into the mountains, offering those incredible valley views. It’s a great way to clear your head.
But lately, my head has been a little less clear, thinking about trail etiquette. We all share these wonderful outdoor spaces, and it just makes sense to be considerate of others. It’s what makes Bozeman, well, Bozeman.
One thing I’ve observed is the music. It’s lovely to have your tunes, but not everyone wants to share your playlist with the whole mountainside. I heard someone once playing what sounded like a polka band at full volume. I love a good polka as much as the next person, but maybe with headphones?
And the dogs! Bozeman is so dog-friendly, which I absolutely adore. But I’ve seen some pups that are just a little too excited, bounding up to other hikers or chasing squirrels right off the path. It’s important to remember that not everyone is comfortable with an unleashed furry friend, no matter how sweet they are.
I often think about what our shared outdoor experience means. We all come here for peace and nature, and a little bit of mindfulness goes a long way in making sure everyone gets to enjoy it. It’s about respecting the quiet, the space, and each other.
Just a few thoughts from someone who really loves our trails and wants everyone to have the best possible time out there.
