It seems like every time I head out for a nice walk up the M Trail, I see something that just makes me shake my head. Our beautiful Bozeman trails are such a gift, and we all want to enjoy them, right? That means following the rules.

Specifically, I’m talking about unleashed dogs. I love dogs, don’t get me wrong. My little poodle-mix, Professor Fluffington, is my hiking buddy. But he’s always on his leash, and that’s how it should be.

Just last Tuesday, I was carefully navigating a rocky section, admiring the new wildflowers. Suddenly, a big Golden Retriever came bounding around the corner, completely off-leash. It startled me so much I almost lost my footing!

The owner was way behind, shouting “He’s friendly!” and “He just wants to say hi!” But that’s not the point, is it? Some people are afraid of dogs, or their own dog might not be friendly. It’s about respect for everyone on the trail.

We all share these wonderful spaces, from the college students running up the M to the families with toddlers at Hyalite. A little consideration goes a long way. Let’s make sure our furry friends are safely leashed so everyone can enjoy our trails without any surprises. It’s just good neighborly sense.
