The Bozeman High Hawks hosted their annual invitational at Valley View Golf Course on Tuesday, where the front nine still feels like 1992 and the back nine borders a four-story development that appeared over the winter. Players teed off on the tenth hole with a clear view of a rooftop deck and a hot tub. No one mentioned it.

Coach Darryl Hedges, who has walked these fairways for twenty-three seasons, stood near the eleventh tee box with his arms folded. “The ball doesn’t care what’s behind the green,” he said. “It only cares if you hit it solid.” His senior captain, Tyler Mendez, nodded and hit a seven-iron to twelve feet.

Belgrade’s team arrived in a passenger van that smelled like range balls and beef jerky. Their top player, Jesse Ortiz, shot a seventy-four while his dad watched from a folding chair behind the ropes. The dad, who declined to give his name, said the course used to be all alfalfa. “Now it’s alfalfa and HOA fees,” he said. He smiled. “Still the same wind, though.”

The wind, as always, came off the Bridgers around noon and turned the par-three seventeenth into a guessing game. Three players hit into the pond left of the green. Two hit over the green into what used to be a pasture and is now a sales office parking lot. The sales office was closed. The flag snapped in the breeze.

Bozeman won the team title by four strokes over Livingston. The Hawks’ fifth man, a sophomore named Kade Wilcox, made bogey on eighteen after his approach landed in a divot someone forgot to replace. He didn’t complain. He tapped in, signed his card, and walked toward the clubhouse where his mom waited with a Gatorade.

The condos on the ridge caught the evening light. They looked expensive. The seventh green looked the same as it did in 1992.
