Big Sky greenhouse opens with two distinct planting plans

The Big Sky Community Greenhouse opened last Tuesday at Town Center Park with a ribbon cutting attended by both populations who stood on opposite sides of the structure. The 30-by-60-foot hoop house was funded by a resort tax grant and a donation from a Yellowstone Club member who requested anonymity. Coordinator Sarah Whitaker said the goal was extending the growing season for everyone.

Inside, the raised beds tell the story. On the north side, retirees like Marge Gunderson, 72, have planted kale, carrots, and potatoes in neat rows labeled with popsicle sticks. Gunderson moved to Big Sky in 1983 when the lift ticket was twelve dollars. “We grow what keeps,” she said. “Something for the freezer, something for the neighbor.”
