Caller reported a ‘very aggressive rooster’ crowing since 4:30 a.m. on South 8th Avenue. Responding officer located a Rhode Island Red in a fenced backyard coop. The bird ceased vocalizing upon officer approach. Homeowner advised the rooster, named ‘General Custer,’ was purchased as a hen in March. Animal Control consulted re: municipal code 6.04.120.

Report of bear at dumpster behind downtown establishment

Officer dispatched to 400 block of East Main at 22:14 for wildlife in refuse area. On scene, observed one adult black bear inside commercial dumpster, apparently consuming spent grain from local brewery. Bear displayed no aggression, ignored verbal dispersal attempts and vehicle siren. Continued feeding for approximately twelve minutes before exiting voluntarily to the north. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks notified. Dumpster lid secured with chain.

Report of large canine in yard; determined to be neighbor's livestock guardian dog

Caller on West Babcock reported a “wolf or possibly a very large coyote” in their backyard at 0642 hours. Responding officer located a 120-pound Great Pyrenees calmly sitting beside the caller’s chicken coop. The dog, identified as “Barnaby” from the Smith residence two doors down, had reportedly escaped through a gate left open by a landscaping crew. Barnaby was returned to his property without incident. The chickens appeared unharmed and reportedly “calmer than usual.”

Livestock reported loose on Bridger Canyon road

Caller reported two horses and a llama grazing in the northbound lane near mile marker 4. Responding deputy located animals, which appeared to be waiting for the school bus. Owner arrived in a 1998 Subaru Outback with a rope and a pocketful of carrots. All three loaded without incident. The llama made sustained eye contact with the deputy.

Bear reported at dumpster on North 7th

Caller reported adult black bear foraging in dumpster behind 406 Brewing Company at 0214 hours. Bear described as “calm and methodical” per reporting party. Officer arrived 0222 hours. Bear had already departed northbound toward Peets Hill. Dumpster latch found unsecured. Business owner advised regarding wildlife-resistant containers.

Caller reported loud music from a short-term rental on Cottonwood Road at 22:47. Responding officers located the property. No occupants present. The only audible sound was a single bamboo wind chime activated by a 4-mph southwest breeze. Caller was advised of the finding.

The chime remained in place. No citation issued.

Llama at large on South 8th

Officer responded to report of a llama standing in the turn lane near the coffee roaster. Animal appeared unbothered by traffic. Owner located two blocks away loading a second llama into a Subaru. Both animals returned to pasture on Cottonwood Road. No citations issued.

Shopping cart recovered from sypes Canyon trailhead

Officers responded to a report of an abandoned shopping cart at the Sypes Canyon trailhead parking area. The cart, identified as property of the 19th Avenue Smith’s by its distinctive blue wheel, was found upright beside the trail map kiosk. No groceries were present. The cart appeared to have been pushed approximately 2.3 miles from the store, including 600 feet of elevation gain. Store management declined to press charges but requested the cart’s return before the weekend rush.

Left behind: REI Co-op receipt for trekking poles ($149.95), a single dog treat, and a parking stub from Bridger Bowl dated February. No forced entry. No surveillance footage. Neighbor’s Ring doorbell captured only a mule deer investigating the open door at 03:17.
