A dusting of snow clung to Sacagawea Peak Saturday morning, visible from Main Street by 7 a.m. The valley floor sat at sixty-eight degrees. Hikers at Fairy Lake Trailhead stared upward through steam rising off coffee cups.

“I brought gaiters but not microspikes,” said Marla Gunderson of Belgrade, checking her phone for the Bridger Bowl webcam. “The ridge looked white from the parking lot. Could be nothing. Could be slippery.”
