Youth soccer tournament kicks off at four corners complex where hay grew last season

The Gallatin Valley Youth Soccer Association opened its fall tournament Saturday at the new Four Corners Sports Complex, where center-pivot irrigation once traced circles across the Alvarez family’s alfalfa fields. Eighty-four teams from as far as Helena and Idaho Falls filled twelve fresh-sodded pitches, their sidelines dotted with folding chairs and idling Subarus.

Tournament director Marge Hovde, 62, watched the first wave of U-10 boys chase a ball toward the Bridger foothills. She coached rec soccer here when the complex was a gravel pit, and before that, when it was the Alvarez place. “We used to mark goals with irrigation pipe,” she said. “Now there’s LED scoreboards and a concession stand that takes Apple Pay.”
